Sperm whale – The deep diver

Physeter macrocephalus

The sperm whale is the largest of the toothed cetaceans (odontocetes) and an exceptional diver, capable of reaching depths of more than 2,000 meters in search of giant squid. Its iconic head houses the spermaceti organ, which it uses for communication and echolocation. They were massively fished for their oil and were on the verge of extinction. They communicate with a complex system of codas (series of clicks) that the CETI project together with MIT are studying in depth.
"When you see it submerge, you can't help but stare until it disappears completely."

Scientific data sheet:

  • Weight: 35-50 tons
  • Size: Up to 20 meters
  • Oceans: All except the Arctic
  • Conservation status: Vulnerable
